1 of the most memorable occasions for parents is when they get to witness their little one’s first tooth erupt. One day you’re looking at a gummy grin and the next, a tiny white tooth is poking through. Its super cool to see but it also raises a lot of questions about when to start brushing, what foods are safe to give, and when that first dentist appointment should be scheduled. And honestly, every day we get alot of similar questions from new parents and it’s a real pleasure to be able to help them get ready for every stage of their kid’s life. Our staff takes the time to sit down with families, explain what to expect, what to keep an eye out for and how to keep those first baby teeth healthy. Oral Surgery includes advanced dental procedures designed to restore and protect your oral health. Treatments may include wisdom teeth removal, tooth extractions, bone grafting, and other surgical services performed with a focus on comfort, precision, and long-term function to help patients achieve healthier smiles and improved quality of life.

The fact that kids should have their first dentist visit by the time they’re one or within 6 months of that first tooth coming in often surprises parents. But even though it might seem a little early, these early visits are all about building trust and giving parents the chance to ask any questions they might have. During those visits we check out those teeth and gums, chat about teething, and give advice on how to keep that baby mouth clean at home. Starting early like that also helps get kids used to the dentist from a young age, which makes all the subsequent visits a heck of a lot easier. Our Smile Gallery highlights real patient transformations and showcases the results of personalized dental and orthodontic treatments. Explore before-and-after photos to see how customized care can enhance smiles, improve confidence, and inspire you to take the next step toward achieving your own smile goals.

Baby teeth are way more important than people give them credit for. They help with chewing and talking, make room in the jaw for those permanent teeth, and actually help shape a kids face as they grow. If any of those baby teeth come out too early or get decayed, it can cause anything from crowded teeth to delayed speech to just plain old pain that keeps them up at night and disrupts their meals. Because of that, we give every little tooth the same TLC as a permanent one. Our team has lots of experience working with the youngest of patients and a good baby dentist in Irvine knows how to handle the unique needs of newborns and toddlers.

Even before that first tooth comes in, your baby’s mouth needs a little TLC. We recommend using a soft, damp cloth to wipe away milk and bacteria from those gums after feedings. Once that first tooth does come in, you can start using a teeny toothbrush and just a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste. And as more teeth come in, brushing twice a day becomes the goal, along with some gentle flossing as soon as two teeth are right up against each other. Plus, since milk and juice can leave those teeth open to decay if left on overnight, we advise against giving bottles before bed.

Another thing that comes up a lot is teething and we totally get it, those weeks can be tough on the whole family. Some babies handle it with ease while others can get pretty fussy and cranky. Honestly though, cold teething rings, a cold washcloth from the fridge or even just a little gum massage with a clean finger can be a lifesaver. We always advise against using numbing gels from the store for young kids though, some of the stuff in them can be pretty bad for them. If your kid is acting strangely, whether it’s a high fever or just refusing to eat for more than a day, call us or your pediatrician.

At Irvine Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, we love welcoming new families into the office and watching them grow and develop over time. We know that first impressions really do last so we make every visit as brief, friendly and as welcoming as possible. Trusting your child to a dentist who gets both the dental and the psychological aspects of early care is crucial in shaping their attitudes towards oral health. If your little one is ready for that first appointment, give us a call, we’d be honored to be a part of your family’s journey.
